New York City Construction Site Deaths Tripled in 2012

In 2011, there were six New York City construction site deaths. In 2012, that number had tripled to 21. These statistics come from a recently-released federal report.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) gives a breakdown of some of the types of accidents that caused these deaths:

  • 8 deaths caused by building collapses/falls
  • 4 deaths caused by falling debris and construction equipment

Out of all the New York City boroughs, Manhattan had the largest concentration of fatalities (nine total). Next was Brooklyn and Queens with four construction-worker fatalities. Bronx reported three of these deaths. OSHA also reported that the amount of construction site fatalities last year was the greatest the city had seen since 2008.

The spike in construction worker fatalities seems to correspond to an increase in New York City building projects. Interestingly, the amount of construction deaths decreased significantly at the peak of the recession, when building jobs were scarce.

Between the years 2009 and 2011, 21 construction workers were killed in accidents. Between the years 2006 and 2008 (end of the housing bubble) fatal accidents totaled 83. OSHA reported as well that while 72 percent of last years’ construction site fatalities took place at nonunion worksites while 28 percent took place at union worksites.

The Law Firm of Steven I. Fried has represented construction workers for over 20 years. We have seen too many examples of unsafe construction sites where general contractors and building owners emphasize cost savings over worker protection. On far too many occasions, OHSA and The Department of Building laws and regulations are ignored, skirted or completely disobeyed. This leads to unsafe work sites where innocent, hard working laborers suffer debilitating and permanent injuries from ladder and scaffold collapses to being struck by falling debris.

If you are involved in construction and become injured, contact the Law Firm of Steven I. Fried. We are here to protect your legal rights and recover monetary damages for your construction site injuries.
