New York City: Pedestrian and Bicyclist Accident Statistics

The frequency of pedestrian and cyclist accidents, in New York particularly, makes them topics of frequent study. Recently, the New York Post published one of the most up-to-date reports on these types of accident statistics specifically in Brooklyn. One of the major findings of the compilation of statistics was that Brooklyn had the highest number of pedestrian and cyclist deaths last year when compared to the accidental death statistics in surrounding areas. Last year, the New York Police Department data indicated that 48 people were killed in collisions with cars. When factoring these same statistics for all of New York City, this number mounts to 155 total deaths, 19 of which involved cyclists and 136 which involved pedestrians.

Brooklyn is the largest New York City borough, population-wise, but it is still shocking that this particular borough was home to more than a third of all New York City injurious crashes in 2012. In total, there were 5,377 pedestrians and bicyclists injured in Brooklyn accidents. Compare this with the total number of injurious pedestrian and cyclist accidents that took place in New York City in 2012. That number is a staggering 15,465 according to recent analysis.

Perhaps the high population of Brooklyn might account for the more frequent occurrence of pedestrian and cyclist accidents in this particular borough, but consider the accident statistics for Manhattan. Studies found that Manhattan, with a population just under a million less than Brooklyn, came in second for the amount of New York City avoidable pedestrian and cyclist accidents. The total number? 41 were killed and just under 4,000 were injured.

When weighing the number of accidents and deaths by the total population of each New York City borough, these are the results:

Brooklyn- population 2,532,645 / 48 deaths and 5,377 injuries

Manhattan- population 1,601,948 / 41 deaths and 3959 injuries

Queens- population 2,247,848 / 40 deaths and 3,483 injuries

Bronx- population 1,392,002 / 19 deaths and 2,142 injuries

Staten Island- population 470,467 / 7 deaths and 504 injuries

Considering these statistics, accidents rates per capita were actually the highest in Manhattan with Brooklyn trailing closely behind. In New York City, the total number of people injured in all motor vehicle accidents involving pedestrians and cyclists numbered over 15,000. While in many other geographic areas the number of total pedestrian accidents would not have been this high, New York City had a total of 11,621 pedestrians injured as well as 3,844 cyclists injured in 2012 accidents.
