Speeding Vehicle Statistics: Brooklyn

Out of the five boroughs in New York City, Brooklyn has the highest speeding vehicle fatality rate. This statistic comes from recent research done by a transportation advocacy group called Transportation Alternatives.

The focus of this study was to New York’s most recent crash data available to the public. In Kings County (Brooklyn), traffic accidents killed 79 people and injured more than 23,000 in 2011.

Queens comes in second as far as most fatalities caused by traffic accidents. That number was 67. The Bronx had 65, and Manhattan had 45. The safest out of all the five boroughs is Staten Island with only 12 fatalities in 2011, according to the study.

Other interesting traffic accident statistics include:

  • There is a 30mph speed limit throughout Brooklyn, which 88 percent of drivers break.
  • Out of all speeding drivers, 30 percent of them drive 10 mph above the speed limit.
  • According to data from the NYPD, law enforcement wrote 2,028 speeding tickets in Brooklyn in 2011.
  • Transportation Alternatives tested driver speeds in four Brooklyn neighborhoods. Within a 12-hour period 2,232 drivers in these four areas were clocked at a speed above the limit.
  • 13 percent of total injuries in New York State originated from Brooklyn traffic accidents.

Greenpoint, Williamsburg, Canarsie, Bay Ridge and Midwood are the statistically worst Brooklyn neighborhoods for traffic.

Carnisie is the worst, and comes in first as the fastest crossed street. 94 percent of drivers exceeding the speed limit on any given day at the Flatlands Avenue and East 107th Street intersection.

Article 30 the New York State Vehicle and Traffic codifies the driving laws as they relate to driving a car at unsafe speeds. Section 1180 governs the “Basic rule and maximum limits.” stating: (a) No person shall drive a vehicle at a speed greater than is reasonable and prudent under the conditions and having regard to the actual and potential hazards then existing.

However, counties and boroughs have their own laws and speed limits which they can promulgate as long as the speed limits do not exceed 65mph.

Speeding drivers are a danger to the common public. If you or a loved one has been injured by a reckless, speeding driver, call The Law Firm of Steven I. Fried.
