65% Increase in NYC Speeding Driver Accident Fatalities

A recently released study by the Department of Transportation reported that the number of people killed on New York City streets last year (2012) in accidents that involved a speeding motorist increased by 65% from 2011.

Last year, speeding drivers were the cause of car accidents that resulted in 81 deaths, compared to 49 deaths reported in 2011.

The troubling and dramatic increase in fatalities was in the city's Department of Transportation study highlights the urgent and acute need for speed enforcement cameras to be deployed on more city streets.

This study also showed that speeding played a role in nearly 30% of all traffic fatalities in 2012.

Janette Sadik-Khan, the New York City Commissioner of the Department of Transportation, said the sharp rise in speeding-related deaths last year proves that more needs to be done to combat speeding on city streets. She emphasized that a large portion of the traffic related deaths were "preventable tragedies."

The commissioner added that speeding drivers create an especially dangerous situation near city schools. Recently, there has been a rash of school children struck and killed by commercial vehicles in residential areas.

State lawmakers, in a recently introduced bill, which is also backed by Mayor Bloomberg, seek to authorize a program to place speed enforcement cameras in 20 school zones in the city. Strangely, the Patrolmen's Benevolent Association (the union for NY police officers) opposed the bill, arguing that city resources would be better spent hiring additional cops.

Overall, there were 274 traffic fatalities in 2012, an increase from 245 in 2011. Of those killed, 73 people were motor vehicle passengers or drivers, 148 were pedestrians, 18 were bicyclists and 35 were riding motorcycles.

It is clear from this report that whether operating a motor vehicle, motorcycle or being a pedestrian in New York City has become less safe over the past few years. Traffic congestion, driver inattention and driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol all continue to be problems plaguing the general public.
